Well construction

Bethlehem Primary School does not yet have a reliable drinking water supply, as the water available is heavily contaminated and undrinkable. A deeper well is urgently needed to provide the pupils with clean and safe water.

Goal: 3800 €

1% already collected

What is our goal?

The school has a borehole that was dug manually in 2017 and serves as an alternative water supply, especially during the dry months when water is scarce. The borehole has a depth of around 7 meters and is not cemented, which results in inflow water being absorbed into the water system. This system can only supply water to the 100 pupils the school had three to four years ago. We now have 303 students in the school and expect to have 540 in three years. Therefore, this system cannot supply water to all the students and 50 support staff.

Recent developments in climate change and the increase in water consumption have severely affected the availability of water in the school and the neighboring community. After research, we came to the conclusion that the best solution would be to build a well at least 20 meters deep. In this way, we ensure the water supply and also improve the purity of the water.

The water supply to Bethlehem Primary School from the Arusha Urban Water Source and Sanitation Authority is not reliable. The best source of water for the school and the surrounding community is the school well, especially during the dry season, but this does not meet the school's needs.

The new borehole will enable students and teachers to improve the cleanliness of all school facilities, including the toilets, and also have enough water for the vegetable garden, which is very important for the school children.

The convenient water source will improve the hygiene of the students as girls are in most cases the most affected by this development of water shortage. In addition, members of the surrounding communities will be able to come to school to use the new water source.
